Shelby Barker Axsom was born on October 18, 1940, in Eden (Draper), North Carolina, to her late parents, Jake Barker and Mary Belle Wilson. As the youngest of thirteen siblings, Shelby grew up in a close-knit family that instilled in her the values of love, compassion, and resilience. She was a devoted member of the Immanuel Friends Meeting, where she found solace and community.

After dedicating over thirty years of her life to Fieldcrest Cannon, Shelby decided to embark on a new chapter by becoming a caretaker for elderly residents in her community.
